Why Mokhada?

Working Where Change Matters Most

Mokhada is a predominantly tribal taluka in Palghar district, Maharashtra. Its communities possess deep cultural strength, resilience and knowledge, while geography, infrastructure and access to quality services continue to create complex development challenges.

Grameen First has chosen to work deeply within this one geography - building relationships, strengthening systems and developing practical solutions that can create sustained change over time.
A strong community
Mokhada's tribal communities bring deep cultural identity, resilience, knowledge and aspirations for a better future.
Challenging Geography
Remote settlements, difficult terrain and uneven access to services make last-mile delivery particularly important.
Development Potential
Children, women, farmers, youth and local institutions hold enormous potential when opportunities and systems are strengthened.
A Permanent Local Presence
GFDF maintains a sustained grassroots presence in Mokhada, working alongside communities and public systems throughout the year.

Development is ultimately about people - their choices, aspirations, resilience and opportunities.

Through stories from our programmes and communities, we hope to show not only what GFDF does, but what change means in the lives of the people with whom we work.

Love2Learn Sci-Ma
"I used to avoid the science lab entirely — it all felt too hard, and I didn't think I was any good at it. Then, through Love 2 Learn's SCI-MA project, I started doing experiments with my own hands instead of just reading about them. Slowly, I began asking questions, then leading my group, then helping other students understand. Science doesn't scare me anymore — now I want to build a career in it."
— Parash, Student, Love 2 Learn SCI-MA Project
Adivasi Lokseva Kendra
"After my husband passed away, I was raising five children alone with no steady income. The ALK team told me about a government scheme I didn't even know existed and helped me every step of the way. Now ₹1,500 comes into my account every month, and for the first time in a long while, I sleep a little easier."
— Smt. Vimal Bachchu Girandhale, Pasodipada, Mokhada, Palghar
Helping Hands in Times of Need
“I was 18 and expecting my first child when my labour began in Bhavaniwadi. A vehicle was arranged to take me to Khodala PHC early that morning, and from there I was quickly moved on to Mokhada Rural Hospital, and then to Javhar for the care I needed. At every step, there was transport waiting and a hospital ready to receive me. I had a normal delivery, and my daughter was born healthy, weighing 2 kilos 550 grams. I don't know what would have happened without that vehicle showing up on time."
— Nita Manoj Kharpade, Bhavaniwadi
